job description

The Archbishops’ Council supports the Church of England to promote and advance its mission and ministry across the country. As the Church seeks to grow a younger and more diverse community of faith, revitalise parish life, establish new Christian communities, strengthen safeguarding, and steward its resources responsibly, the Council plays a critical role in shaping national strategy and supporting diocesan and parish life. This is a pivotal moment for the Council as it continues to seek to encourage and enable the Church in its role of proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ to communities in a vast array of different contexts in the nation.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Chair of the Archbishops’ Council. This influential leadership role will involve guiding a complex trustee board, shaping strategic priorities, fostering a positive and inclusive culture, and ensuring effective governance as a large charity. The successful candidate will bring substantial experience chairing large, complex boards and a track record of working with diverse stakeholders to build consensus and drive effective decision-making. They will be a committed Anglican with a deep understanding of, and passion for, the mission of the Church of England, alongside the credibility, judgement and communication skills required to represent the Council with authority and integrity.

If you are inspired by the opportunity to help shape the future of the Church’s mission and support its work across the nation, we would be delighted to hear from you. For more information and to apply, or for an informal conversation about the role and your suitability, please click Apply.
